Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’. It is a form of alternative medicine called energy healing. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which the “universal energy” is transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.
Energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can cause illness. Reiki can be used to improve just about any aspect of life, from physical health to emotional well-being.
Reiki is best performed in a peaceful setting, but it can be carried out anywhere as Reiki ‘knows where to go‘. The client will sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a table, fully clothed. There may be music, depending on the client’s preference.
During your Reiki session
The Reiki practitioner will do a body scan feeling for any blocked energy. Their hands are then placed lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand positions, for between 2 and 5 minutes in each position. (If there is a particular injury the hands may be held just above the wound).
As the hands are held lightly on or over the body, the transfer of energy takes place. During this time, the you may feel warm or tingling sensations, or even see colours or have memories come up. all of this is perfectly normal. Each hand position is held until the practitioner senses that the Reiki energy has stopped flowing in that area.
